A few years ago I devoted an entire year to adding a personal touch to every birthday gift I sent, a little reminder to the special people in my life to show how much they are appreciated. The petit hanging banner is CsevenM's alternative gift card with a perfect personalised message for all special occasions. Using the principal of recycled cards, the banner is layered together from scraps, remnants and a selection of upcycled fabrics with pretty hand stitched details and a charming and sometimes ever so slightly amusing message.

If you want to try making this yourself you will need the following.

  • Selection of cotton fabrics.
  • A pencil (if you are not confident with your drawing skills) and a fine black pen
  • Sewing thread and a needle
  • Wooden skewer stick
  • Cutting tool (I used nail clippers as I couldn't find my scissors at the time)
  • Sandpaper
  • String

Once you have all your tools draw your illustration onto the fabric. Cut the balloon shape in contrast fabric and lay it in position according to your image. Using the needle and thread stitch all the way around the balloon piece ,approximately 3mm from the cut edge. Cut your illustration fabric piece to size, then using a separate piece of fabric write your message. Position the illustration fabric onto the message fabric, stitch the top and bottom edge of the illustration fabric to the message fabric, again approximately 3mm from the cut edge. Cut the banner and the skewer stick to size (file down the end if needed, I couldn't be bothered to go and get my tool box so I used my nail file). Wrap the top edge of the banner around the wooden skewer stick and stitch both layers of fabric together as close to the stick as possible. Finally tie string to either end of the stick and your very own CsevenM Petit Hanging Banner is ready to gift!

I have recreated this project with my godchildren (ensuring all the pieces are pre-cut) and instead of stitching we simply used glue, perfect for a rainy day activity.
